Merger may force closure of Fredericksburg-area Giants, Martin's

Stockholders' approval this week of a merger between the parent companies of Giant Food and Food Lion could lead to the sale or closure of area Giant and Martin's supermarkets.

Mark Federici, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400, sent an email to members Wednesday listing eight Giants in the Fredericksburg area and Maryland that will be offered for potential sale as part of the merger. They included the only Giant in the city of Fredericksburg, plus two in Spotsylvania County and three in Stafford County.

"Our Union will do everything possible to make sure any potential buyer preserves the jobs of all current members and all the terms of our current contract," Federici said in the email.

Food Lion, which has 21 stores in the Fredericksburg area, is nonunion.

Royal Ahold owns both Giant Food of Landover, Md., and sister company Giant Food of Carlyle, Pa., which trades in Virginia as Martin's. An industry expert said he had seen a list of possible closures that also included the Martin's stores in Culpeper and the Richmond area, but those have not been confirmed. The Richmond stores were formerly Ukrop's stores.

Reaction from area Giant Foods shoppers to the news about the potential closures was strong, if comments posted on The Free Lance-Star's Facebook page Thursday are any indication.

"This stinks. I love Giant," wrote Dawn Street.

Kristine Probus wrote, "The really rotten part is that Food Lions do not have pharmacies." She said her family has been getting prescriptions filled at the same Giant pharmacy for over 15 years and doesn't feel like switching to another store.

Several people said that they felt bad for Giant employees, and Sylvia Schiller–Manuel said she wondered what this will mean for people such as her father, a longtime Giant employee who depends on his pension and Social Security.

Ahold USA spokesman Chris Brand said in an email that the Federal Trade Commission is currently reviewing the merger, which remains on track for completion in mid-2016.
